Amendment to the Act on the Residence of Foreign Nationals

BEFORE NOW

All family members fell into a single category.

The Act now differentiates between “close” and “distant” family members – applications involve more paperwork and “distant” family members can get a residence permit for a maximum of 3 years.

Travel insurance covering necessary and urgent medical care was sufficient.

Third-country nationals entering the Czech Republic for over 90 days are now required to have comprehensive health insurance.

Comprehensive health insurance could be taken out with any authorised insurance company.

For the next 5 years, VZP is the only insurance company authorised to provide comprehensive health insurance to foreign nationals.

Some identity documents issued to third-country and UK nationals were non-biometric.

All identity documents issued to third-country and UK nationals are now biometric. Both groups must obtain new identity documents by 2023.

Newborn children of foreign nationals were not covered by the public health insurance.

Newborn children of foreign nationals with a long-term residence permit are temporarily covered by the public health insurance.

EU and UK nationals were issued with a “temporary residence certificate”.

EU nationals now receive a non-biometric “certificate of registration” valid for 10 years while UK nationals get a biometric “certificate of registration” valid for 5 years.

EU nationals and their family members were exempted from most of the administrative fees.

New administrative fees are now charged, applying also to EU nationals and their family members.
