Council declassifies CETA negotiating mandate

On 15 December, the Council decided to declassify its negotiating mandate for the Commission (adopted in 2009, with a modification in 2011) for trade talks with Canada. The deal was finalized at an EU-Canada summit in September 2014, with legal scrubbing and translations being under way. Although no major changes usually occur at this point, several modifications to investment-protection clauses are expected. The deal will then be formally signed and ratified by the EP and possibly all 28 national parliaments.

The 2009 negotiating directive is accessible here, its 2011 modification regarding investment protection is available here.
