Deal on trade in IT products concluded by Council

On 17 June, the Council concluded on behalf of the whole EU, a new agreement on trade in IT products. The agreement eliminates most of the tariffs in IT products. It was agreed in December 2015 on the margins of a WTO ministerial meeting. The signatories to the agreement are 50, including the 28 EU member states, and they represent 97% of IT products trade. The agreement is a novelization of the 1996 agreement and it broadens the scope of the original deal to cover the recent developments in IT – new generation semiconductors, GPS navigation systems, MR imaging devices, communication satellites or touchscreens are now covered. The EP gave consent to the agreement on 8 June, following the adoption by the Council it will be applicable to the whole EU.
