Some 1.7 million robots already exist worldwide, however their use is not yet properly regulated. MEPs asked the European Commission for rules to regulate their use in order to clarify issues such as civil responsibility in case of accidents or damages.

According to the International Federation of Robotics, robot sales rose by an average of 17% per year between 2010 and 2014, and by 29% worldwide in 2014 alone.
