Due to recent developments in Ukraine, the EU´s High Representative for External Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission Catherine Ashton issued a statement on Saturday deploring Russia´s actions on the Crimean peninsula as an unwarrented escalation of tension and calling for peaceful settlement of the issue. Any action, she states, has to be in accordance with the UN Charter, the Budapest Memorandum and any bilateral treaties in effect. In order to discuss the developments at EU level, an extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council meeting has been called for Monday 3 March and following this meeting HR Ashton intends to visit Ukraine to meet with all stakeholders on Wednesday.
