May 2012: Business and Consumer Surveys

A new set of business and consumer indicators has been released recently. The Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) decreased sharply in May, falling by 2.7 points in the EU and by 2.3 points in the euro area, to 90.5 and 90.6, respectively. The decline was driven especially by falling confidence in all business sectors.

However, confidence of the consumers improved in both the EU27 (to -19.4 from -20.2 in April 2012) and the euro area (to -19.3 from -19.9 in April 2012). The Business Climate Indicator (BCI) for the euro area decreased by 0.26 points to -0.77. The decline was driven by a more negative assessment of all components (e.g. past production, production expectations, overall order books or export order books).
