New energy saving measures approved by the EP

On Tuesday, 11 September, the European Parliament adopted a new set of rules concerning energy efficiency. Energy efficiency directive includes energy saving measures as renovation of public buildings, energy saving schemes and energy audits for large companies. The directive should help cut energy consumption by 20%, as it was projected in EUROPE 2020 strategy.

The directive focuses on both public and private sector. Member states will have to renovate 3% of the total floor area of their offices bigger than 500m2 and from July 2015 of more than 250m2. Likewise, all large firms will be required to undergo regular energy audits every four years. The directive will enter into force in following weeks and member states will have 18 months to implement it into their national legislation.
