Road charging should change within the EU

The EC has declared a strong will to contribute to a fairer and more effective system of road charging within the Internal Market. Road charging systems should be more transparent and apply the same conditions on residents and non-residents.
Currently, seven Member States — Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia — have time-based "vignette" charging schemes for private cars. EC’s preference is to introduce distance-based toll systems around Europe. The EC’s guidelines also include minimum short term vignettes, an acceptable daily price ratio and clear information about the price.
