The European Union has been awarded Nobel Peace Prize

On Friday, 12 October 2012, the project of the European Union has been awarded a Nobel Peace Prize by the Norwegian Nobel Peace Prize Committee. The Prize has been given to the EU for its ”contribution for over six decades to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe."

However, the prize has come at the time of unprecedented economic and politic turmoil in the EU. In his reaction, openly euro-skeptical Czech president Vaclav Klaus said, that “it is a tragic mistake and an empty award”.
