CICDP: 14 European countries incl. Czech Republic seek ban on data localization

Czech Industry Coalition on Data Protection CICDP points to the fact that a coalition of 14 countriesm including the Czech Republic, agreed on 2 December on a position to push the European mission to propose a legislative ban on unjustified laws that keep data within national borders.

The move came as ministers met at the Telecoms Council in Brussels. Countries will discuss the Commission’s upcoming “free flow of data” initiative, which has recently been diluted into a mere communication in hopes of a future regulation, CICDP writes.

The coalition includes Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia, Sweden and the U.K.

“National legislation should not be an artificial barrier to market access for enterprises from other member states.” “We now call on the Commission to deliver a legislative proposal that addresses other unjustified barriers to free flow of data.”
