Czech Workforce Report 3 updated for 2016 data: Prague Employment and Median Wage 2011-2016

AmCham Advocacy team is publishing updated Czech Workforce Report 3: Prague Employment and Median Wage 2011-2016 (full version in English attached). Read also reports on Southern Moravia (Jihomoravsky region) and Ustecky region.

Key findings

Employment. Although the number of managers remains below the 2011 level, it increased by 8% y-o-y in 2016 (3,200 positions added, mainly in the private sector).  

Employment. The numbers of professionals, technicians and clerical workers exceed their 2011 totals,most remarkably in the case of professionals (an increase by 11%, or 17,300 positions, since 2011, mainly in the private sector). 

Employment. Private sector technicians added the highest number of positions (7,000) y-o-y in 2016..  

Employment. Technicians (33%), professionals (30%) and managers (8%) total 71% of all employment in the region. 

Employment. While the total employment in the private sector has been increasing (almost 5% y-o-y in 2016), it has been stagnating in the public sector (-0.2% y-o-y in 2016). 

Wages. In 2011-2016, all occupational categories in the public sector experienced double-digit median wage growth ranging from over 12% (public sector craftsmen) to over 23% (public sectors managers).  

Wages. In the private sector, managers recorded the lowest median wage growth (–4.6% ), while plant, machine operators, assemblers saw their median wages rise by15.4% in the period.  

Wages. In 2016, private sector manager median pay fell by 3.1% y-o-y, which is the only negative wage growth among all occupational categories in both sectors. Managers in the private sector recorded the lowest, managers in the public sector the second lowest y-o-y median wage growth among all occupational categories in both sectors. 

Wages. In 2016, median wage of private sector plant, machine operators, assemblers recorded the highest y-o-y growth (8.9%) among all occupational categories in both sectors. 

Wages. Professionals in the private sector have been catching up with managers in terms of median wage. 

Wages. The median pay gap between public sector professionals and public sector technicians is very narrow.   

Wages. In 2016, in two out of six occupational areas (clerical workforce, technicians), public sector workforce earned a greater median wage than a private sector counterpart.  

Wages. In 2016, public sector craftsmen earned the lowest median wage among all occupational categories in both sectors. The median wage of clerical workers, craftsmen and plant, machine operators, assemblers in the private sector was almost equal.   

Wages. In 2016, approximately 34% of the total compensation in the private sector and 41% of compensations in the public sector were paid to professionals.
